Expression and Regulation of -, -, and -Crystallins in Mammalian Lens Epithelial Cells

چکیده
PURPOSE. In the mammalian lens, the expression of the and -crystallin families is thought to be limited to fiber cells. However, several studies detected these proteins or their mRNAs in human lens epithelial cells. To resolve this apparent discrepancy, 14 crystallin mRNAs were examined and the expression and subcellular distribution of selected crystallin proteins in lens epithelial cells determined.

Physiological expression of lens α-, β-, and γ-crystallins in murine and human corneas
PURPOSE How corneal transparency is formed/maintained remains largely unclear. A group of enzymes which are referred to as enzymatic crystallins were proposed to contribute to corneal transparency in various animals. This study investigated whether the three classical lens crystallins, namely α-, β-, and γ-crystallins, exist in mouse and human corneas. METHODS Mice, human tissues, and culture...
متن کاملEvalauation of Laminin Expression during Mouse Lens Development
Introduction: Among the components of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and basement membrane (BM), laminitis heterotrimeric glycoprotein (laminin) and collagen type IV are the most important. In a previous study we have examined the role of collagen type IV in the developing lens capsule. The present study aims to determine the appearance and distribution of laminin in the BM and ECM of lenses ...
متن کاملFrs2α enhances fibroblast growth factor-mediated survival and differentiation in lens development.
Most growth factor receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) signal through similar intracellular pathways, but they often have divergent biological effects. Therefore, elucidating the mechanism of channeling the intracellular effect of RTK stimulation to facilitate specific biological responses represents a fundamental biological challenge. Lens epithelial cells express numerous RTKs with the ability t...
متن کاملSynergism between temporally distinct growth factors: bFGF, insulin and lens cell differentiation
Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) are the only known factors that can induce differentiation of the mammalian lens epithelial cell, while insulin acts only as a mitogen, not as a morphogen. We show here that insulin enhances expression of the alphaA-crystallin gene in lens epithelial cells and induces the synthesis of lens fibre cell specific betaB2- and gamma-crystallins in early differentiated...
متن کاملMMP and TIMP expression in quiescent, dividing, and differentiating human lens cells.
PURPOSE Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and the tissue inhibitors of the MMPs (TIMPs) have been implicated in lens differentiation, growth, remodeling, and cataract. Hence, a gene expression analysis was undertaken in epithelial and fiber cells dissected from clear human donor lenses. METHODS The human lens was dissected into three regions: anterior epithelial, equatorial, and fiber cells. P...
